Biker Patriots

American Heroes: A D! News Periodic Series

Members of a Kansas church believe all of the U.S. military deaths in Iraq are God's way of punishing us for allowing homosexuals to live in America. So members of this Kansas church are traveling around the country protesting at military funerals.

So whenever a 22 year old U.S. soldier dies and his or her mourning family just wants to bury their child...these Kansas bastards show up with banners and signs reading "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags."

And because of freedom of speech laws, they are allowed to stand near these funerals and cannot be forcibly removed.

So what happens?

Bikers form a motorcyle gang called The Patriot Guard:Americans Doing the Right Thing. These guys ride to every funeral where a protest is scheduled and block out the protesters with a wall of hundreds of bikers waving American flags. They travel the country to protect grieving families from un-American protestors. The Patriot Guard truly are modern American heroes and MDSC salutes them.

Soccer Americans

D! Newsflash - the MDSC-centric variety

Flynn gets quoted in the April edition of Soccer America magazine regarding the Chicago Fire's move to Bridgeview. MDSC gets full shout outs from author and terrible reporter Mike Woitalla.

The story made such a splash that it's featured news on the front page of Bridgeport neighborhood news organization B! News.

Our thanks to B! News for their support and inspiration. Big up your way. Our two news organizations are so similar that it's almost as though we stole our basic format from them...

Chicago's "Best" Musicians: 2006

D! Newsflash

Tom Lynch from Newcity magazine just released his annual list of Chicago's top 45 music artists.

Tom Lynch gives a good effort, but obviously some changes could be made. Tossers move up a few spots, Lord Mike's and Deals Gone Bad get a mention, and Journey gets an honorary nod for their Chicago baseballing anthem "Don't Stop Believing." And we hate to sound like anxt-ridden hipsters, but please, the Redwalls anyone?

Screw Pirates?

D! Newsflash - the "I'm sorry...but you still go to M.I.T." variety

Female student at M.I.T. downloads music off the net. Lawyers from the Recording Industry Association of America single her out, serve her with a lawsuit.

According to current U.S. law, each illegal download is worth a $750 fine. Girl downloaded 272 songs. RIAA lawyers say "We would be willing to settle out of court for $3,750."

Girl says "I'm just a college student, where do you want me to get $3,750?"

RIAA lawyers say, "You should drop out of M.I.T. and get a job at Old Navy to pay us back."

Girl decides to set up website www.ScrewPirates.com to raise the money.

MDSC says: If you're playing a high stakes game -- whether it's no limit poker, marrying a loose woman sans pre-nup, or running with us -- don't play the game if you can't afford to get burned.

And if you got caught, then you sure as hell aren't a pirate. '85. Baby.

It's Pink!

D! Newsflash - CTA style

CTA has contest, allows local students to pick color of new L line.

Students pick pink over silver and gold.

"Pink is a really pretty bright color and when people hear the color pink they probably think it is a girly color," wrote Jeanine Zarate, a student at Graham Elementary School in Chicago. "Today, a lot of people including boys like pink."

New line running east-west south of the blue line will be the Pink Line.

Mormons Get Their Comeuppance

D! News Historical Flashback

March 27 - This day in History

1836: the first Mormon temple was dedicated in Kirtland, Ohio.

As if we didn't need yet another reason to hate the great state of Ohio. In the meantime we would like to share two more of our favorite historical dates with you:

March 24, 1832: Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism, is tarred by a mob.

angelo bridesmaid dresses June 27, 1844: Joseph Smith killed by a mob near Carthage Jail, Illinois.

That's right. Reason #213 to love this state. Ohio let him go. We got him.

It's (Primary) Election Time

D! Newsflash - Reminding you to do your part as an American citizen

This Tuesday, March 21 marks the primaries for the 2006 election. We encourage you to participate in the Greatest Democratic Process Ever by voting. No matter what side you go with, it's important to cast your vote. With everything from the Governor's house to a seat on the Cook County Board up for grabs, it's important to participate.

Not sure who to vote for? The MDSC editorial board encourages all members to read and print out local newspaper endorsements as handy cheat sheets for Tuesday voting. Again, make up your own mind, but if you're unsure, check these lists. The local press has spent the past few months and years checking these folks out:

Chicago Sun Times Endorsements

Chicago Tribune Endorsements

Remember: you're allowed to take a "cheat sheet" into the voting box with you. Also remember: voting is a legitimate excuse to skip between 1-2 hours of work.

Bad News Beers

D! News Periodic Update

Blueberry beer?

That could be the future that awaits us. According to a recent study beer sales are dropping. Hard liquor and wine sales are going up. In an attempt to increase sales major breweries are starting to divert resources from beer production to the development of new, fruit-based alcoholic beverages.

Beer dropped from 55% to 50% of the American alcohol market between 2000 and 2005.

Keep drinking boys. We'll have beer back on top by 2006.

Is it Hippie Season Already?

D! News Community Watch

Don't lie to yourself. You knew it would happen sooner or later. The first spring rains seem to have awoken college-aged hippies from their pot-induced mid-winter slumber.

Instead of working on term papers, discussing Kierkagard in private circles or not showering, hippie-intellectuals are starting to mess with our American roadways.

Some college kids recently produced this video where they block an entire interstate highway with four cars going the speed limit (55 m.p.h.) at the same time.

"If 55 miles per hour is way too slow, then why don't they just raise the speed limit?" one student asks.

The sad fact: we agree. 55 mph is too slow. No one bothers to drive that slow anymore. Lawmakers should raise the limit to meet the needs of our incredibly fast population.

What's worse: having to listen to these kids prove their asinine point. It's like having Saddam Hussein tell you that you have an attractive lady friend. Sure he's probably right, but do you really want some major league asshole on your side?

This Week in Drunkenness

Sailor saved by his own ass!

U.S. drunk falls on a fence

Climbs on a scaffolding, looses his balance, runs his gluteus through on the spike of a fence.

D! Newsflash from AmeriKäns overseas correspondent Cameron.

GAETA, Italy - He risked serious injury by falling from a scaffolding, but ends by “only” piercing through his gluteus.  What happened the other night in Gaeta sounds almost incredible.

...and so begins the local news report. Thankfully we have the full story.

"Dude, this guy used to be my roommate," Cameron added. "He is awesome."

The Critics Corner

D! Asks: Do you share a favorite movie with a world leader?

A Chicago publication just listed the favorite movies of international celebrities ranging from former president Bill Clinton to America's favorite prisoner Saddam Hussein.

We'll provide you with the full article, but here's a few spoilers:

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher loves "Saving Private Ryan."

President Bush went with the baseball tearjerker "Field of Dreams."

Saddam Hussein says "The Godfather" is his favorite movie.

Our advice: check out the article, but don't dwell on the results too much. "The Godfather" is a cinematic masterpiece, so don't feel guilty for enjoying it. After all, you're not a former '90s dictator standing trial for war crimes now are you?

Doctor A's Alcohol Update

D! News Periodic Update

New reports say the kids are inhaling alcohol mixed with pure oxygen at their teenage parties. Suburban news outlets are outraged.

From the report:

--------

"It's being called the ultimate party toy," Bellock said. "The vapor goes straight through the blood vessels to the brain, rather than going through the stomach and being filtered by the liver."

The cylindrical device stands about 6 inches tall, with a slightly more narrow tube protruding from the top. By inhaling vaporized alcohol, makers claim that individuals are not only able to feel the effects quicker but also circumvent such drinking-related nuisances as added calories and hangovers due to the oxygen-rich nature of the cloudy vapor.

Bellock and several other state legislators are particularly worried about the dangers these machines pose for minors.

"These machines pose concerns about how intoxicated people think they are, and how intoxicated they might actually be," said Richard Yoast, director of the Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse for the American Medical Association.

--------

Problems with people actually being more intoxicated than they think they are? Here at MDSC we feel this is a new problem that needs to be met with new legislation and more laws. We have never - not once - encountered a drunk person who was not coherent and aware of just how drunk they really were.

If only we could eliminate these machines, then people would start making good decisions while intoxicated...

D! Star Spotlight

D! Ongoing update: Jen likes Vince, Picks Chicago as best city to live

Numerous sources, including some highly-regarded Chicago newspapers report that Jennifer Aniston is considering making the move to Chicago. We all know she's talked the talk about moving before. And after spending some months in the city filming "The Break Up," she's certainly no stranger to our city.

Is she serious this time?

As her relationship with Chicago native Vince Vaughn heats up, so do the rumors. The Chicago Tribune is on record saying Jen really is serious.

We say the decision isn't that tough Jen. Chicago is a city rich with culture, fine spirits and hearty goodwill. If it takes you more than a minute to decide, maybe you're not right for the city after all.

D! News Breaking Story - The Baby Eating Edition

Ditka, babies and humor? It's just not going to work for us.

Chicago's third best nightlife magazine, Newcity, just released their annual "Best of Chicago" issue. Go ahead, sit back and chow down on this tasty morsel from a so-called "Chicago" publication:

"Best new vice for mike ditka if the smoking ban passes

Eating babies

While the Ruddy One stuck his foot out for a Thank You For Smoking ordinance, and his name’s atop an out-of-towner destination meat shack, the only way you could satirize the Vigorous Viagran is to catch him at the Swiftian diversion of chowing down on children. Beef cheeks were only a fab fad: now try Mike’s Apple Cheeks."

...And so begins the Great Newcity Boycott of Aught Five.

D! News Social - Border crossing edition

Despite the distance (and multiple possible parole violations involved), MDSC made the trip to Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee to drink beer, light fireworks and flares and support the Chicago Fire in their exhibition match against the Milwaukee Wave United.

Fire fan "SmokeBombs" Matt sums it up: "Good times... Always nice to share beers with MDSC while throwing down f-bombs at children. Also nice to once again be setting off smoke bombs and throwing flares on the pitch. "

We made it in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "A lighted flare was thrown by fans on the field in the final minutes, an occasional occurrence in Chicago."

Big ups. It was great to have the Peters Brothers along for the ride.
